1922 — The Discovery of King Tut's Tomb

On November 4, 1922, Howard Carter's workmen uncovered the top of a buried stone step in Egypt's Valley of the Kings — the first trace of the tomb of the boy king Tutankhamun. Carter had been funded by Lord Carnarvon after years of fruitless digging, a long search that had found little to reward its patience. Now, at last, the ground itself began to answer, one cleared step at a time.

Carter cleared the steps and peered through a small hole into a chamber glittering with gold. It was the beginning of the greatest archaeological discovery of the century — a hidden royal tomb, found at last in the valley.
