2008 — The Beni Amrane Station Bombings
On June 9, 2008, two bombs exploded minutes apart at the railway station in Beni Amrane, east of Algiers, Algeria, killing thirteen people. The first blast killed a French engineer working on station renovations, and his Algerian driver, as they were leaving. The second device struck the soldiers and firefighters who had rushed to help.
Eight soldiers and three firefighters died in that second explosion, among the year's deadliest attacks in Algeria's long fight against armed insurgency. No group claimed the bombings at once, though suspicion fell on al-Qaeda's North African affiliate, long active around the capital region. For families nearby, the pattern was painfully familiar: a public place, a sudden blast, and a long conflict arriving without warning.
