1838 — Blood River

On December 16, 1838, some 470 Voortrekkers under Andries Pretorius faced King Dingane's Zulu army at the Ncome River. Traditional accounts say 3,000 Zulu fell and the river ran red — though historians warn that the figures are shaped by legend, and the careful reader should hold the numbers as tradition rather than settled count.

The date became the Day of the Vow. After apartheid, it was renamed Reconciliation Day — a day South Africa now keeps for healing. Few dates carry so complete a transformation: a battlefield anniversary, kept for generations as a vow remembered, deliberately remade by a democratic nation into an occasion for reconciliation. The river's name stayed; what the day asks of the country changed.
