1960 — Niger Gains Independence from France

On August 3, 1960, Niger declared independence from France, with Hamani Diori becoming the new republic's first president. The vast Sahelian nation, nearly twice the size of Texas, won its freedom through negotiation rather than war, as Paris granted sovereignty across French West Africa in rapid succession that summer.

Diori would rule for fourteen years before a military coup removed him in 1974. Yet the day itself outlasted his presidency. August 3 remains Niger's national day, celebrated with parades and wrestling matches — a yearly reminder of the moment a huge, landlocked people took their future into their own hands.
