1968 — Tanzania Recognizes Biafra

On April 13, 1968, President Julius Nyerere of Tanzania issued a statement recognizing the Republic of Biafra as a sovereign entity, the first nation in the world to do so. He framed the breakaway Nigerian republic's cause as a humanitarian crisis, not politics. It was a lone and deliberate decision, taken while the rest of the world held back from recognition.

The decision shattered the Organization of African Unity's sacred principle of territorial integrity. Only Gabon, Ivory Coast, and Zambia followed Tanzania's lead. Nyerere's stand put human suffering ahead of a cherished continental rule, and it remains a defining test of that principle.
