2000 — The Gambia's Student Massacre
On April 10, 2000, schoolchildren across The Gambia took to the streets in peaceful protest against alleged brutality by the security forces. They were met with live ammunition. State forces under Yahya Jammeh's government killed 16 schoolchildren and Red Cross volunteer Omar Barrow over two days of demonstrations. The government at first blamed the students themselves for what had happened.
Later, the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission proved the young protesters had been unlawfully killed, overturning that official account. More than two decades on, their families are still demanding justice — for children who marched peacefully and never came home.
